[ENG] „Let’s go back in time and reminisce about the year 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began, bringing about unprecedented situations and restrictions. Remember the period when the first movement limitations within the country were introduced, and the term ‚lockdown‘ was unknown concept to us, with people walked outside only when necessary. It was a time when all of this was new and unheard of for us. Today, we may have forgotten about it all, perhaps we’ve grown accustomed to it and nothing surprises us anymore. But in March 2020, it was different.“
The year 2020 began in Slovakia with a great deal of frustration. The tension and nervousness from the ongoing parliamentary elections at the start of the year were soon replaced by panic and concerns about a new virus (COVID-19) spread around the world. The global pandemic spared no one, including Slovakia, where a state of emergency was declared in March of that year. The ongoing situation brought numerous restrictions, resulting in empty streets in towns and villages. This situation instilled in me a need for artistic expression, and I chose to do so through a photography project this time.
Throughout Slovakia, you can find numerous Marian or Trinity columns that were built in the past to commemorate the overcoming of past plagues. Although the epidemic caused by the novel coronavirus didn’t wreak as much havoc as historical plagues, I used the symbols of these columns as fragments in a collection of self-portraits. These columns were erected in the most significant and frequented locations in various towns and villages, places that you would rarely see devoid of people during daylight. However, the current situation, much like in the past, almost entirely depopulated these areas. Therefore, the photographs carry a unique authenticity from a specific time and place, a testament to the pandemic of 2020. The priority was to traverse the diverse landscapes of Slovakia as comprehensively as possible (despite the restrictions on movement), authentically photograph myself near to columns, and capture the deserted atmosphere. To emphasize authenticity, I wore a mandatory face mask when outside my residence and held a banner with a hashtag, which I used as a symbol of the current pandemic translated into the language of social media. In addition to the analog photographs that emphasize the past when these columns were erected, digital shots were simultaneously taken to evoke the present pandemic, and these are shared on social networks with the hashtag #SLOVAKIA2020. For this specific project, I chose to present only the digital series of photographs because it was the most comprehensive and, therefore, more suitable for exhibition spaces.

[SK] „Skúsme sa vrátiť späť do doby a zaspomínať si na rok 2020, kedy začala pandémia COVID19 a priniesla doposiaľ nepredstaviteľné situácie a obmedzenia. Spomeňte si na dobu, kedy začali prvé obmedzenia pohybu po krajine, lockdown bol pre nás ešte neznámi pojem a ľudia vychádzali von naozaj len keď museli. Na čas, keď toto všetko bolo pre
nás niečo nové a nevídané. Dnes sme už možno na všetko zabudli, možno sme si na všetko zvykli a už nás asi nič len tak neprekvapí ale v marci roku 2020 to bolo inak.“
Rok 2020 začal na Slovensku veľmi frustrujúco. Napätie a nervozitu z prebiehajúcich parlamentných volieb, ktoré sa konali na začiatku tohto roka vystriedala panika a obavy z nového vírusu (COVID19), ktorý sa šíril svetom. Prebiehajúca celosvetová pandémia neobišla ani Slovensko, kde bol v marci toho roku vyhlásený núdzový stav. Prebiehajúci stav priniesol množstvo obmedzení, ktorých efektom boli aj vyprázdnené ulice miest a obcí. Táto situácia mi dala potrebu reakcie prostredníctvom umeleckého projektu. Tentokrát v podobe fotografií. Po celom Slovensku sa nachádza množstvo mariánskych alebo trojičných stĺpov, ktoré ľudstvo stavalo v minulosti na počesť prekonanej morovej epidémie. I keď epidémia z nového korona vírusu nezanechala za sebou toľko spúšte ako mor, využil som symboly morových stĺpov ako fragment pri kolekcií autoportrétov. Stĺpy boli stavané na najvýznamnejších a najfrekventovanejších polohách jednotlivých miest a obcí, na miestach ktoré by ste vsúčasnosti málokedy videli za bieleho dňa bez ľudí. Situácia ktorá tu ale prebiehala, tak ako v minulosti, tak aj teraz tieto miesta skoro úplne vyľudnila. Fotografie preto v sebe nesú jedinečnú autenticitu z konkrétneho času a miesta ktorú priniesla pandémia v roku 2020. Prioritou bolo prejsť čo najčlenitejšie územie Slovenska (aj navzdory nariadeniam obmedzujúcich pohyb po krajine), autenticky sa odfotiť pri jednotlivých stĺpoch a nasať vyľudnenú atmosféru. Autenticitu zdôrazňovalo nasadené rúško ktoré bolo povinné nosiť mimo
bydliska a transparent s hashtagom, ktorý som použil ako symbol súčasnej epidémie prenesený do jazyka sociálnych sietí. Preto okrem analógových fotografií ktoré majú zdôrazňovať minulosť, kedy boli morové stĺpy postavené, súbežne vznikli aj digitálne zábery ktoré pripomínajú súčasnú pandémiu a sú zdieľané na sociálnych sieťach s heslom #SLOVENSKO2020. Pre toto konkrétne podujatie som sa rozhodol predstaviť iba digitálnu sériu fotografií lebo bola najčlenitejšia a tým pádom vhodnejšia pre tieto výstavné priestory.
