The decline of insect populations is one of the most alarming environmental catastrophes facing humanity. Since 1970, 50% of the global insect population has already vanished. According to numerous credible scientific studies, there is a strong likelihood that within the next 100 years, all insects and other invertebrates could become extinct. This concerns particularly vital species such as bees, butterflies, hymenopterans, beetles, dragonflies, spiders, and others. The extinction of insects is ongoing even as we speak, and it is primarily driven by human activity—especially the excessive use of pesticides in agriculture, artificial lighting, dense traffic, urbanization, and climate change, which is itself largely anthropogenic.
If this trend continues, we will face a tremendous crisis, as insects are an essential component of natural ecosystems—ecosystems that are, in turn, indispensable to human survival. “If we fail to halt the decline of insect species, it will have catastrophic consequences for the planet's ecosystems and the survival of humanity,” stated Francisco Sánchez-Bayo from the University of Sydney.
It is uncertain whether this situation can still be reversed. Through my installation, I aim to bring this grim prognosis into the present moment—creating a sense of absence and emotional impact through the perceived lack of insects, thereby highlighting the severity of the issue.
The Artifact is a self-sustaining ecosystem containing insect life, which I hope will endure for at least several decades for future generations, when insects may be rare or entirely unknown. Just as we now gaze in wonder at museum exhibits and ancient artifacts from a bygone era—objects that no longer exist—so too will our descendants one day look upon the insects preserved within this artifact. The entire concept is projected 100 years into the future, imagining a world without insects, and my intention is to evoke that atmosphere of absence already today.
Since 2021, I have been working to create a world of symbionts within the Artifact, designed so that key invertebrate functions within the ecosystem can continue independently and sustainably over the long term. While the Artifact is currently stable, it remains under ongoing research to ensure its long-term self-sufficiency.
To emphasize the importance and rarity of insects—and to evoke a museum-like atmosphere—I developed the installation in a semi-interactive form, also set 100 years in the future, creating the impression of a preserved museum artifact. This includes details such as a laser security system, boundary posts with velvet ropes, and a museum label dated to the year 2100.
I also deliberately chose a futuristic design, which lends the installation a distinctive atmosphere and merges seamlessly with the Artifact, forming a unified whole—a singular work created for future generations, but which already today serves as a reminder of the apocalypse we are facing.

Úbytok hmyzu je jedna z najalarmujúcejších katastrof ktorej čelí ľudstvo. Od roku 1970 zmizlo už 50% populácie. Podľa viacerých relevantných štúdií je vysoký predpoklad že do 100 rokov zanikne všetok hmyz a iné bezstavovce. Ide predovšetkým o veľmi užitočné druhy ako sú včely, motýle, blanokrídlovce, chrobáky, vážky, pavúky a iné. Vymieranie hmyzu prebieha aj v tejto chvíli a je zapríčinené predovšetkým človekom a to nadmerným využívaním pesticídov v poľnohospodárstve, umelým osvetlením, hustou dopravou, urbanizáciou ale aj klimatickými zmenami ktoré sú tiež hlavne v réžii človeka.
Ak bude tento trend pokračovať tak budeme mať obrovský problém pretože hmyz je nevyhnutným článkom vo fungovaní prírody a tá je bezmála potrebná aj pre človeka. "Ak sa úhyn hmyzích druhov nepodarí zastaviť, bude to mať katastrofálne dôsledky na ekosystém planéty a prežitie ľudstva," konštatoval Francisco Sánchez-Bayo z univerzity v Sydney.
Je otázne či sa táto situácia dá ešte zvrátiť. Prostredníctvom inštalácie sa snažím preniesť túto prognózu do súčasnosti a vytvoriť tak dojem a pocity s absenciou hmyzu už dnes a poukázať tak na extrémne vážny problém.
Artefakt je samostatne fungujúci ekosystém s hmyzím životom ktorý verím že pretrvá minimálne desaťročia pre nasledujúce generácie, kedy hmyz bude niečo vzácne a nevídané.
Tak ako dnes pozeráme s údivom na exponáty v múzeách na artefakty z dávnych čias na výtvory ktoré už dnes neexistujú, tak budú hľadieť naši potomkovia na hmyz v tomto artefakte. Celý koncept posúvam v čase o 100 rokov, kedy hmyz neexistuje a snažím sa tak už dnes nabudiť atmosféru s absenciou hmyzu.
Od roku 2021 som sa snažil vytvoriť svet symbiontov pre Artefakt tak, aby nosné prvky bezstavovcov v ekosystéme mohli fungovať naozaj dlhodobo a bez akéhokoľvek zásahu. Aj keď je Artefakt stabilný, tak v súčasnosti stále podlieha výskumu pre jeho dlhodobú nezávislosť.
Pre zvýraznenie dôležitosti, vzácnosti hmyzu a nabudenia atmosféry som pre artefakt vytvoril ľahko interaktívnu formu inštalácie ktorá je taktiež posunutá v čase o 100 rokov a vytvára dojem muzeálneho artefaktu. Ide o detaily ako laseroví bezpečnostný systém, vymedzovacie kolíky so zamatovým lanom alebo muzeálny štítok ktorý je tiež posunutý do roku 2100.
Všeobecne som zvolil aj futuristický dizajn ktorý dodáva inštalácií jedinečnú atmosféru a spolu s artefaktom korelujú v jeden celok, jedno dielo ktoré som vytvoril pre nasledujúce generácie ale ktoré už teraz pripomína apokalypsu ktorej čelíme.
